FAQS
About Our Textiles
What is a kantha quilt? A kantha quilt is a hand-stitched blanket that is made up from many layers of recycled cotton sari fabric sewn together with the traditional ‘kantha’ running stitch. Each one is unique, and the colours range from softly muted to vibrant and bright. The size and weight of each quilt also varies, so we list the dimensions of each quilt and the weight as well as suggesting what size bed it would be suitable for.
Are kantha quilts washable? Yes, they are. Both our vintage kanthas and the block print bedspreads are machine washable at 30C (up to 40C) and they are best dried naturally, although they can be tumble dried. In fact, kantha quilts get softer the more you wash them.
How else can I use a kantha quilt? As well as using them on the bed, they make wonderful sofa throws and are a quick way to change the look of a room without the hassle of completely redecorating. They can also be used to make cosy door curtains, tablecloths, picnic blankets and for light upholstery (that bedroom chair that rarely is sat in, but looks pretty in the corner). Children love using them in the garden, for making tents and dens.
What’s the difference between your vintage kantha quilts and your block print bedspreads? Our vintage Kantha quilts are genuinely older pieces, traditionally made from layers of recycled cotton saris. Each one is unique, with its own colours, patterns and hand stitching. They tend to be smaller in size and feature the fine, intricate stitching characteristic of traditional kantha work.
Our block print bedspreads, by contrast, are made from two layers of new cotton fabric and are produced to specific dimensions. Each design is hand block printed and made in small quantities, making them a special addition to the collection.
What size are your block print bedspreads? Our block print bedspreads are available in two sizes: Single and Large.
The Single measures approximately 1.45m x 2.20m (57in x 87in). It works beautifully as a single bedspread, a throw across the foot of a double bed, or even as a tablecloth.
The Large measures approximately 2.20m x 2.70m (87in x 106in). It will cover a UK double bed (140cm/4ft 6in) with a generous floor drop. On a UK king (160cm/5ft), US queen, or super king (180cm/6ft) bed, it can be used lengthways across the bed, extending up towards the pillows for a relaxed, layered look.
If you're unsure which size would work best for your bed, please get in touch and we'll be happy to help.
Are your French linens and Hungarian textiles genuine antique/vintage pieces? Yes, each item listed on our website will state whether it is antique or vintage, vintage being more than 20 years old and antique over 100 years old.
Do antique/vintage textiles have signs of age or wear? Yes. The beauty of antique and vintage textiles lies in their history, and many pieces will show gentle signs of age or use. We carefully inspect every item and always photograph and describe any notable wear, repairs or imperfections in the product listing.
Are antique/vintage textiles washable? It depends on the item, for example antique linen bed sheets and table napkins are machine washable at up to 60C, but other items may need to be hand washed or dry cleaned. Care instructions can be found in each product listing on our website.
