This vintage hand embroidered cushion comes from the Kalotaszeg region of Transylvania. The design is hand stitched on a rustic cream hemp fabric with raspberry red cotton and the cushion closes with cotton ties.
The cushion measures 53cm (21inches) x 42cm (17inches).
The cushion is in good condition , there are some light brown age marks on the top of the cushion but they barely show.

This style of embroidery is known as Irasos or Hungarian written embroidery, a folk style that originated in Transylvania in the 1700s and is still practised today in Hungary.
Eastern Europe is famous for its hand stitched embroideries and folk textiles. Women would embroider their clothing and household articles with flowers and animals as part of their dowry.
