This antique French curtain pelmet is made from fine cotton lawn, embroidered with crewel work - known in France as 'un rideau de Cornelys'. This curtain dates from the Napoleon 111 period (1850 - 1870). A scalloped edge runs along the bottom. This curtain heading may also have used around the top of a four poster or tester bed.
The pelmet measures 72cm deep and 3.6 metres long (28 inches deep x 142inches long)
This beautiful embroidered curtain is in very good condition for its age and delicate nature. There are several areas with pin prick holes but by the time the fabric is loosely gathered to hang it up, the holes will be barely noticeable. There are also some areas of wear at the top of the pelmet, but this could be easily remedied by adding a band of cotton tape at the top, which would also allow you to hang the pelmet.
This is a truly stunning Chateau style window treatment that is in very good condition for its age. It could be adapted to make smaller curtains for perhaps a bathroom or to decorate around the top of a four poster or tester bed.
Care instructions: hand wash only, no spin and line dry.
