Pair of Antique French Cornelys Curtains
This pair of antique French curtains are made from fine cotton lawn, embroidered with crewel work - known in France as 'un rideau de Cornelys'. These curtains date from the 1900's. The scalloped edge runs down one edge of each curtain and along the bottom of the curtain. The top of the curtain has been gathered and the gathers stitched in alongside a hand stitched white tape that could be used to hang the curtain from a baton or pole.
The scalloped edges are on the same side of each curtain, so if used as a pair when they met in the middle you would see one scalloped edge and one straight edge. However in all other respects, the embroidery, width, length and heading tape they are both the same.
These curtains are in very good condition. There are a few small holes but by the time the curtain is loosely gathered on a pole the holes will be barely noticeable. One curtain has an area on the side of the curtain that has been carefully repaired (see the last photo).
This is a truly stunning Parisian style window treatment that is in remarkable condition for its age.
There are 2 curtains and each curtain measures 1m wide (61 inches) at the top where it is gathered and 1.7m wide (67 inches) at the bottom. Each curtain is 3.05 metres long (120 inches).
