A vintage Irasos cushion, the traditional design is beautifully hand embroidered in a raspberry red cottton thread on a rustic cream linen fabric and backed with cream cotton, the cushion closes with buttons.

The embroidered section on this cushion has been rebacked on to cream cotton, there are a few faint marks on the reverse side of the cushion, see the last photo.
This style of embroidery is known as Irasos or Hungarian written embroidery, a folk style that originated in the Kalotaszeg region of Transylvania in the 1700s and is still practised today in Hungary.
Eastern Europe is famous for its hand stitched embroideries and folk textiles. Women would embroider their clothing and household articles with flowers and animals as part of their dowry.
