This antique French curtain pelmet or 'cantonniere' is made from fine cotton lawn, embroidered with crewel work - known in France as 'un rideau de Cornelys'. This curtain dates from the Napoleon 111 period (1850 - 1870)
The pelmet measures 72cm deep and 2.05 metres long (28 inches deep x 81 inches long). A scalloped edge runs along the bottom. This curtain heading may also have used around the top of a four poster or tester bed.
This beautiful embroidered curtain is in very good condition for its age and delicate nature. There are several areas with pin prick holes and one larger hole (see the last photo) . By the time the fabric is loosely gathered to hang it up, the holes will be barely noticeable. A narrow band of cotton tape has been stitched to the top edge and some small brass rings, which would have been used to hang the pelmet.
This is a truly stunning Chateau style window treatment that is in very good condition for its age. It could be adapted to make smaller curtains for perhaps a bathroom or to decorate around the top of a four poster or tester bed.
