Vintage Irasos Embroidery Wall Hanging

This vintage East European embroidery has been hand stitched in the irasos style of embroidery using a  raspberry red cotton thread on a creamy hemp background. (The colour is less bright than the photos, and has a slightly faded air. It is in very good  condition, with just a few small rust marks on one corner (see the last photo).

It could be used to make  cushions, as a wall hanging or a table runner. It would originally have been used on the wall as a decorative hanging. The red blanket stitch border is a brighter red and a later addition to the piece. 

It measures 0.81m deep (32 inches) x 1.63m long (64 inches). The embroidered section measures 0.30m deep.

Eastern Europe is famous for its hand stitched embroideries and folk textiles. Women would embroider their clothing and household articles with flowers and animals as part of their dowry.
